Photographing the moon
by Andy
I don’t think anyone didn’t know that last night was a good night to photograph the moon. We didn’t plan to take any photos of it. It was only when we returned home afte a long day of waiting for various childrens activities to finish that we grabbed the camera and headed to the roof.
Armed with the Nikon D80, the 18-200mmVR, and later the old Vivitar series 1 70-210mm zoom not forgetting the cheap tripod that we use for travelling, we begun our first shoot of the moon; hmmm, not so easy. I quickly realised that the auto light setting would not work and had to resort to trial and error, there didn’t seem to be a reliable calculation that I could get to work. I tried to set the light on nearby buildings to get a close setting but the moon was always too bright. The zoom was also not close enough, 200mm neaded to be about 500mm as the moon still looked too small on-camera.
The photo above is from our attempt. Let us know what you did and how?
It’s only afterward that you have time to consider how it should have been done, so here are a few links that seem to be doing the rounds to help future attempts;

I was lucky, I read the news of the once a big bright moon on the newspaper, so I was waiting for it that night, it was so round and bright, but I don’t have a camara.
