Lost in translation – or something gained

272kbus

Yesterday was my first experience calling to stop the bus; a 16 seater bus that goes like bloody hell around every hair pin bend. The main problem was – I had to shout it “next stop” in cantonese. This didn’t seem to hard, I’ve heard it many times before, only never said it. Maybe this time someone else will get off also? Hmm, not so. So here I go. Confidently, I shout “Ba See Jai”. This gets the bus to stop, also a little snigger from a couple of people behind me.

Once off the bus I ask if I said it correctly, apparently not. I should have said “Ba See Jam”; this would have been the correct way to say next “next stop”. So what did I say?

Well apparently it meant: Little bus.
