I thought it was an investment to buy

Is this a trend that will be affecting the world?
Looking at this chart it seems that it is not worth buying into housing as the worth is going down (even over the longer period). Taking this into account; should I be buying a property with the idealism of having my own pad will give security. As these figures seem to tell me differently.
